You or the baby?

by Kazue Tsubasa
The doctor put his hand on her arm and said gently, “You or the baby will survive. Not both. I’m sorry.”

…What?

What baby? Me? Huh? Survive?

Why do you need to be sorry?

My…baby?

Survive…someone’s dying?

“What?”

“Dear, I’m sorry to hear that too, but, we have to give up on him. All I have is you. I can’t give up on you, Eli.” He said with hurt in his eyes. It was obvious that he didn’t have much sleep with his eyes this red. The bags under his eye didn’t make it any better.

“B-But!” She tried to get up from her seat.

“Eli!” He held her down.

“I don’t care! I will tell the doctor to save him!” She cried out.

“Please, Eli! No!” He yelled, “I can’t live without you, don’t you understand?” He couldn’t control his emotions at all and he didn't like it.

“…” She remained silent and stood up slowly after his husband released his grip on her. She vanished through the door soon after.

“Doctor?” She knocked on the door and waited for a response which came in pretty soon.

“Yes, Madam?”

“Can we talk?” She went in the room. The doctor gave her an approving nod and she sat down in front of him. “Well, about the decision…”

“Yes?”

“I have decided…” She looked at him with determination in her eyes.

“The operation is a failure. I’m sorry. I couldn’t fulfill what the patient wanted to.” The doctor said with a solemn expression.

“What?!” The man stood up abruptly. “What did you say?!”

“Please calm down, sir.” The doctor said, “The mother’s safe.”

“What…? Safe you say? But—“ He looked at him with a pale face.

“Yes, the mother wanted the baby to survive but it ended up as a failure. I did my best to save the mother. I’m sorry. That’s all I could do.” He explained.

“Well…It’s okay…It was what I have chosen…” Colours returned to his face as he mustered up a small, tiny smile.

“Well, I’ll take my leave now, sir.” The man nodded and the doctor left. The man went in the room and saw his wife on the bed, crying and sobbing.

“Eli, my dear,” He went closer to her. “It’s okay. I’m here.”

“B-But the baby--!” She hugged him tightly.

“Eli dear, its fate. We can’t stop this. I’m here for you.” He patted her back and said.

She broke down in tears and the room was filled with her crying sounds.

“Doctor? Thanks for everything. Here’s what I promised.” She handed him a check.

“Sure madam, but,” He took the check, “Are you sure it’s a good decision to lie to him?”

“I have to look like a good wife in front of him. Who cares about the damn baby anyway? I would never give up my life for him.” She showed disgust in her eyes. The doctor couldn’t help but frown.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------Flashback---------------------------------------------------------------------------

“I have decided…” She said, “To save my own life, not the baby’s.”

“Pardon?” The doctor choked on his tea when he heard the answer. He had never heard such an answer from a mother. Never.

“Just kill the baby. I don’t care. I want to live.” She said. “ But be sure to tell my husband that I wanted to save the baby. I’ll give you some money if you do.”

“…” He considered. “Deal.”

The woman left with a smile and once again went back to her house with a sad and depressed look.
