The Girl Without Face

by M.D Khamil

The time showed 1.08 am. Fatah
and Salma were siblings and driving home late from a friend birthday party. It
took about twenty minutes to reach home, but since it was already late the road
was dark and misty. There were no initiative from the local authority to build
on some street lights, even though the villagers had been complaining a lot
about it to the head village, which eventually became another ignored requests.
The area where they lived was a remote village somewhere in Kedah, east
Malaysia, away from the nearest town which is about twenty eight miles away.

“Can you drive faster?” said
Salma.

“I can’t, it’s too dark. The car
lights won’t be too much of a help.” Answered Fatah.

“The road is too silent. I’m
having goosebumps all over.” Added Salma.

“What would you expect? It’s the
dead of the night!”

“I can see that. But can you
drive faster?”

“Sis, I can’t drive faster, the
fog is too thick and it’s freaking pitch black! It’s so hard to see the road!”

Salma murmured to herself. Then,
a sudden movement in white crossed the road.

“Fatah look out!”

But it was too
late. They hit the thing or animal or whatever it was that crashed head on to
the car. Salma was totally freaked out.

“Oh God! What
did I just hit?” roared Fatah.

“No! No!”

“Salma you
stay here. I’ll have to check what did just happen.”

“You’re going
out? No way!!! Let’s just get out of this place!!!”

“We can’t just
ran away! What if we hit a person? We’ll be in big trouble!”

“Nobody’s
around!!! Just leave this area at once!!!”

“You’re not thinking
straight. I’m going.”

Fatah went out
of the car. He then checked on his car bumper. There was a solid bend and
curved, looked like it was hit hard. He looked around for whatever that was got
hit. But there was nothing. He checked under the car but there was nothing down
there as well. Fatah went back to the car.

“That was
strange, there was nothing around.” Fatah only realized that he was talking
alone. Salma was gone. The passenger’s door was wide opened. Fatah went out of
the car again and searched for her.

“Salma! Salma!
Where are you!? Don’t play stupid games now alright? We got to go back home now!
This isn’t funny!” Nothing. No answer. The car door suddenly shut by itself and
someone drove the car.

“Hey! Stop!
Salma is that you?! Don’t leave me you stupid bitch!” The car was driven slow
and Fatah was managed to keep his pace with the car. He was yelling like a mad
man.

“Stop! Please
stop! Salma!” As Fatah looked right through the window pane, he saw someone
else not Salma. The mysterious girl then slowly, faced Fatah. To Fatah’s
horror, the girl who drove his car had no face. Just a plain skin on the face,
no eyes, no mouth, no nose. Fatah stopped running and going back to the
opposite direction from where he came from. He ran as quickly as possible and
at the faint distance he saw Salma was crying standing alone in the dark road.
Fatah tried to yell to tell he was there but his voice was as if frozen and
couldn’t let out a voice, not even a whisper. Salma obviously couldn’t see him. The
car was driven backward in a fast speed and heading toward Salma. She was about
to get hit by the car. She saw the car and running toward it, she thought it
was Fatah but the car was not showing any sign to slow down it’s momentum.
Salma was hit, went under the car and died instantly at the scene.
