I was ecstatic; I was included in the team, my dream had finally come true. But then followed the apprehension, I hadn’t played football or trained for it for past 3 months, I was in bad shape and my stamina had taken a hit too. Moreover, I normally play at left wing, but the injured player I was replacing played as a right back. How can I play as a right back? I was anxious when we went down to the pitch to practice; I tried passing the ball to a player, it didn’t even reach anywhere near him. I tried shooting, no luck there too. I was wondering if I would be the reason that we would lose this match and this was an important match too, a knockout. What if I become the sole reason for losing the match, I won’t ever be given a chance again. Then I looked at the opposition players and they were doing tricks, passing perfectly and shooting with both foot effortlessly. My morale that was already down headed further south. I was seeing doom.
The match started and I was told to play at right back position. The first 5 minutes, the ball was mostly in the mid of the field, both the team were trying to get into that final third area of the ground to try and shoot. I being a left winger started pushing forward leaving my goal post alone and then it happened, an instant counter attack and goal, without me the two defenders were left in shatters, they could do nothing. The coach called me and asked me to stay at my place, don’t roam here and there like some hitchhiker. My confidence had taken a serious hit by now, as both my pace and football dribbling skills were not to the mark. Then, after 15 minutes, our left wing took a hit and had to be replaced, I went to the coach to ask him if I can play at his position and fortunately he said yes. For the first 10 minutes, I didn’t do well; I was giving the ball away very easily and wasn’t doing anything to help the team keep the ball. Then at 32 minute mark, I got the ball in the opponent penalty area and I kicked the ball towards the opponent nets, but, instead of taking the usual hit from the side of my foot, the ball hit my feet fingers and moved oddly. I was sure that I would be criticised for this, however, the opposition team goalkeeper made a bigger blunder by diving to the wrong side and the ball went in somehow at a snail’s pace. Woah! I had scored and suddenly I thought I can win this game for my team, my confidence was back.
After that goal I scored one more and provided two assists. We won 4-1. This shows that even when the circumstances are against you, never quit trying, after all a single moment can change your fortunes and your life forever.
