Part 1: How We Met

by M.D Khamil
It is almost raining. The sky is darkening fast, and my little brother seems to be sleeping peacefully. We’re still staying in the alley of a quiet apartment building, next to a trash trolley, filled mostly with hard papers and boxes. I don’t like staying with the other homeless people. Sometimes they go crazy, fighting each other for a food left over. And I hate that. It makes me sad. In the far distance I see two drunk men coming closer to us. Two tall figures, both wearing bandanna, leather jackets, jeans and a pair of black boots of the same brand. Both men have thick mustache and a long dark beard. I know them, I see them almost everyday. The biker twins. Jeffry and Jesse. They’re always wasting time in that bar they call “Blue Lucy”. Heck, I don’t want them here.

“Hey! Jeff! Look what do we have here!” says Jesse.
“Oh hey pretty girl, are you alone? Taking care of your little brother? Come here to papa and let’s have some fun in the bar.” Jeff winks, and slowly cup his hand on my face. But I quickly, slaps his hand off me.
“Go away!” I yell. They were laughing creepily and they smells awfully like beer. Both men blocking me, I want to run but I can’t leave my little brother. Jeff is stripping his leather jacket now.

“Go away! Or I’ll call the police!” I yell again.
“You? Police? The police never cared to pay attention to people like you”. The drunk twins is laughing hard now, horribly. They both hold me tight, slowly stripping my clothes. I cried and beg them to stop. I’m struggling hard to let loose their grab from holding my hands.
“It is so good to taste another virgin, been a long time since I tasted one.” Jeff let loose his belt and unzipped his jean but suddenly-

“Hey! Let go of the little girl!” shouts the mysterious man. Jeff now back standing releasing his grip from my hands and properly wearing his jeans back. Jeff and Jesse walks toward the mysterious man. He wore a raincoat with brown hat and a black umbrella. I can’t see his face clearly from where I’m sitting, shockingly disturbs with what had just happened. I managed to wear back my clothes. Even though I can’t see the man clearly, but I can still hear their conversations nice and clear.

“What is your problem old man?” says Jeff.
“The problem is you kid. I just saw a crime I do not like to see. You’re abusing a child. A sex crime. And this problem of yours is unforgivable. I usually kill criminal immediately when I see one, especially pedophiles. Now in a count of three, get the hell out of here”.
“You just called me a kid? Are you joking? Jess let us give this old man a good beating!”
But the old man is very fast he takes out his gun from his right pocket. Both Jeff and Jess stops in mid action.
“One . . . Two . . . Thr...”
“Okay! Okay! Stop! We go now!” Both of them run away like cockroaches being sprayed by pesticide. I’m still sobbing. And the old man comes to me.

“Don’t stay here anymore kid. This is my address. If you like, you can come to my place with your little brother and leave this awful place. We live in a harsh world and sometimes the reality can be very painful. I’ll be waiting for you. There is a lot more to explore in this world rather than just sitting next to a trash container”. The old man walks away, and disappears within the darkness. It leaves me wondering and hanging on the words he had just said.
