Hero In White

by Kazue Tsubasa
O' Holy angels in the heavens,

Can you grant my small wish?

She opened her eyes, and all she saw was white. She blinked and gazed up.

"A-Angel!" She uttered.

With white robes and golden hair that shines even in this rundown and dark house, the man in front of her stood tall.

"Thank you for your daily prayers, little girl." He smiled and knelt down to her height; his robes fluttering a little. "How may I help you?"

"I-I..." She felt her legs go limp but he held her hand and supported her.

The angel's smile never faltered as he waited for her response.

"Help my grandmother." A firm voice rang clearly.

Surprised by how quickly she adapted to the situation, he looked at her in a daze until she repeated herself.

"Ah, my apologies," He said, "May I have a look at her?"

Nodding, she led him to a room and then gestured at the bed, as his gaze followed her directions.

On the bed was a fragile woman. She looks pale and her bones were almost showing. As she coughs, her whole frame shook violently. It pained the angel to look.

"The doctor said he couldn't help her anymore." The words came out quick, but rough.

"Trust me."

Two words, just two words; yet, it like the he lifted all her burdens off her shoulders.

He stepped forward with light steps. "Stay there."

White wings manifested out of nowhere behind his back. The girl gasped in awe at them but soon realized something was not right.

His hand reached out towards his right wing and grabbed on his feather. He closed his eyes and smiled with a hint of sadness.

Goodbye, Father.

The wing...only has one feather left.

She was about to ask, but the feather was plucked out. He gently placed the feather on the woman's head and muttered some chants. "May you be blessed." The feather slowly vanished into her.

The girl ran up to him and looked at him with worried eyes, "Your wings..."

"It's okay." He placed his large hand on her head, covering her sight as his featherless wings disappeared. "Your grandmother will be okay soon."

"Really?" She said, "Thank you so much for saving her!"

"You're more than welcome, little girl," He smiled. Gladness filled his heart, it was the right choice to help, and it always was.

"But, what will happen to you?"

His smile was wiped away from his face. "I..."

I'll be okay.

No, how can he lie to her?

"I have no home to go back to now." He said sadly. "I lost my wings."

"But you're still alive, right?"

"I guess I am."

"Then you can stay with us." She said. "We can give you a home to return to."

"Can I really?" He frowned. "I may cause you problems."

"Trust me."

It was the exact same words.

He smiled as tears starts to well up. She found her hero, and so did he.

A heartbreaking, negative story. Cruel, but truly shows how the world is now. Selfish, despicable human beings.
