The Little Obedient Wall Clock

The little obedient Wall clock

I was sitting at the table trying to read this assignment, but the tick- ticking of the clock hanging on the wall above my head, sounding like a monotonous rain drop on a leaking roof, was getting into my concentration. I stopped writing and turn to look at the clock. To my amazement, it completely ignored my concern and continued tick-ticking.

Now come to think of it, how did you, noisy tick-tick come into being? I asked in my thought. There is no point try to raise my voice because it will not even hear what I am saying. Dumb ass. Well, I think the clock is not totally dumb after all. It accurately keeps the time without showing any sign of strain. I know no human could be this diligent. It only shows strain when it is hungry. Did I say Hungry? Well, where ever it draws its strength from could be its food. Like this one that uses battery. It gets weak when the battery life has run out.

Well it’s not all together independent of itself. It depends on the life of the battery to live and function. I could just remove the battery and it will not disturb my work. Do you think it heard what I am contemplating to do? It looks so venerable. I will just allow it to be click-clicking on.

My father's clock which was almost twice the size of this, was not dependent on the life of battery. It was functioning on its own, and occasionally chimes out the time in a mournful tone. I was always scary when it rang out the time in the middle of the night.

My little son is not so scary of this one. I do not even think he thinks of it in any other way than an instrument to check the time so that he will not be late going to school.
I sat back to continue my work while the clock continued on its endless tick-ticking. It’s a handy piece of ornament in the house. No, I looked back at the clock; it remained so peaceful on its work like an obedient servant. I think that is it, a servant that can be sent on any errand. Sometime quite evil and sinister; I am not going to think of this my clock as being capable of being used for any other purpose than keeping the time.

With that as a consolation. I forgot the clock and concentrated on completing this assignment.
