HE TURNED HIS EYES AWAY

I heard the Lord cried out
in Pain and in Agony
for my sin to purge.
On the cross at Calvary’s mount:
“Eloi, Eloi, Lama Sabachithani”

Him upon whom there was no sin.
But for mankind loved He so precious,
Thus with His precious blood, doth He
Redeemed my soul from death, crying:
“My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?”

My heart rents at the sound of that cry.
I looked unto heaven, full of gracious
adoration, unto Him who thus painfully;
even at the point of rejection by the Father:
Redeemed an ungracious world from death.

Kneeling down in humble adoration;
Renting my heart in sublime submission,
I rendered my soul, my strength to him.
Then from the depth beyond this realm,
His awesome presence saturated me.

In the depth of my soul was the question
“Lord, did you turn your eyes even
From your Son, on account of my sins;
That his cry still echoing in my soul
Eloi, Eloi, Lama Sabachithani?”
