One man looked different from others, and
He seemed not to indulge in pleasures.
All his friends were enjoying life, but Das
Was asking; everything will come to and end,
And what is the meaning of all these?
The land where he was born had sages,
Spiritualists and seers and Das could not find one.
The lonely man went to Haridwar and
Sat on the steps leading to the Ganges,
Awaiting the master of sages.
He heard a voice, 'What is your problem?'
'Why don't you join others' parties?'
Das said, 'I have had enough;
Too much humiliations, failures, griefs
And my only friend died.
The voice said, "You lucky man,
Lucky to be born in this land,
You and I have been here many times,
You and I did many things,
Both good and bad and...
Like the electromagnetic waves
That fill our space,
The net total of our good and evil
Work within our frame well
That will undo the troubles.
You may not remember your evil deeds
You must have done good and bad and
Your penury is the result of your own deeds
And therefore do not grieve man,
Turn to the almighty and be pure.
Das said, I now get the light,
My foes who laugh at my doom
Were the ones I laughed at an earlier phase
My woes are the result of my own deeds
And now I get the light.
He sat there for a few more hours,
Made up his mind not to complain,
Not to foster revenge and wrath,
But to turn to god and prayed,
Give this poor man strength to hold on,
Hold on to all the virtues that lead to glory here and hereafter.
