My mom always tells me that I should be good to everyone, that I should be kinder and generous to those who are in need, But of course me, being such a spoiled and a stubborn creature, I didn't take heed to it. Until one day, that day that marked a big change in my life, the day that I will never ever forget and forever I will be remorseful of...
Abby, would you like to come with me? My mom asking me as I sit on the sofa, flipping the pages of the magazine.
Where are you going? I asked
I’m going to the orphanage, we’ll have a thanksgiving party for Mia. She answered back to me as she busied herself getting ready to leave.
Why do you really want to help those kids from the orphanage? I asked as I continued to flip the page, paying no attention to what my mom was doing.
Because, I am fortunate to have a better life and they need help. She answered back to me.
My mom was a very good person, she liked helping people who need her help and worked in different orphanage. Sometimes, I feel like people are abusing her kindness. There was even this one old woman that she allowed to get inside our house and give her food.
Abby, I think you’re not going anywhere today. Well, our house help took a day off today and the old woman remember her...?
What old woman? I blurted out to her.
The woman who usually come to our house to eat.. When she comes, can you please let her in and give her food? My mom kindly asked me.
Sure! I said as I roll my eyes. I think it’s crazy to allow that old woman to come in and get food from our house.
A minute after my mom left, our doorbell rang, I hurriedly got up from the sofa, thinking that It might be my mom who went back to get something she forgot.
But, when I opened it, I saw the old woman. She looks sick and thin.
What do you want? I ask in a not so friendly tone.
She looked down and speak, “Your mom told me to get some food and medicine here.”
Huh! What do you think of us? A house of charity? No she’s not here and you can leave. You’re stinky and you’re polluting the air I breath, I shouted on her.
I was about to close the door when she hold it, and said, “Someday, you’ll regret the things you’re doing now. You will never ever forgive your self once you know the truth. How I wish that you have learned to be humble.” And then, the old woman left.
The next day, I saw my mom crying, her eyes were puffy. I was worried that something bad might happened to her. I came to my mom and asked her what happened, why she was crying.
She said, Did the old woman come here yesterday Abby?
Why does it matter? I questioned back.
Just answer me Abby!! She said shouting at me.
I was surprised by mom’s reaction.
Did she come Abby? She said crying.
Yes, she did, I said. I was so scared with my mom’s reaction.
Did you give her the food and the medicine?
No, I didn't. Why should I? She's strong enough to find a job. Why does she needs to ask everything from us?
Abby, How can you be so mean? I didn't raise you to be that kind of person. Do you who that woman was? She asked me.
No, and I’m not interested to know. I said and turned my back to my mom.
Stay Abby, I have something to tell you..
That woman..she started in a shaking voice...
That woman, she was the one who gave you a better life. With out her, you’re not here, with out her you might be one of those children begging for money. She said crying.
I was confused...
What do you mean mom? I said confused and my heart it’s beating fast as I listened to my mom’s answer. I feel like my heart going out as I waited for her answer.
A long time ago, I got pregnant, your dad and I we were so delighted to have a baby. After, so many attempts of having a baby, we at last was blessed to have a baby. But, the baby got sick when she was one year old, we thought It was just an ordinary fever. But it wasn't, we rushed her to the hospital but unfortunately the baby wasn't able to survive. She died.. I was devastated.. I want to die with her.. and on that same day, a woman was crying too. She was begging to doctors to save her baby..The baby has a high fever, she was begging and begging and crying to save that baby, she even kneeled down, but doctor paid no attention. She was desperate and she approached me and your dad. She kneeled down and asked help from us. She knew that I lost a baby too. She begged to save her baby, and in return she will give that baby to us.
I was sad to have lost the baby too, and so I helped her and in return I took you from her..
My mom was weeping as she told me the story, and me on the other side, I was shaking, still in shock to found out the story and to know who that woman was..
My mother , my real mother who sacrificed and kneeled and begged just to save me. But I, I didn't do anything to save her and even deprived her a small help..
