It was a sunny day. Luke woke up at the sound of his mom's voice over the phone. He could hear her sobbing and muttering to someone about the funeral details. Death - the sound of it made Luke uncomfortable. He preferred to get ready and go to work rather than eavesdropping.
Soon Luke headed towards the dining table fot breakfast but to his surprise the table was empty. He looked towards his mom and asked her," Who died Ma?" But his mom said nothing and completely ignored him. He ignored her behaviour too and thought that the person who died must be too close to her mom. But he still did not know who it was. He left for work and thought he might get something to eat on the way to work.
He waited for a cab for almost twenty minutes now. There were many empty cabs going in that direction but none waited for him. It was getting late and he decided to go by bus. But he could not afford to wait any longer now. So he decided to walk to his office. Atleast he would reach his destination rather than wasting his time waiting for public transport.
On the way he saw a vendor selling some tacos. His mouth watered and decided to give himself a treat. He went to the stall but the vendor ignored him. Luke saw he had other customers as well. Luke was very angry with the attitude of the vendor. He yelled at him, "Don't you value your customers. Its because of us you can run your business." But it not make any difference to the vendor. He kept ignoring Luke. With rage Luke went away straight to work.
He reached his office and saw that his colleagues had already started working. They were all busy with their work and nobody saw him entering. He went towards his cubicle and was surprised to see someone else sitting in his place. He was not informed about his termination. He was getting frustrated now. Nobody bothered to inform him about anything. He wanted to fight with his superiors but they were not present. Dejected he went out of the office and decided to head home.
Just as he came downstairs he saw a shop selling tacos. He thought he would go and have them, something to cheer him from this lousy day. Luke went to the shop and realised he forgot his wallet. 'Damn, today is definitely the worst day of my life', he thought.
Luke decided to go home. He had no option but to go by foot again.
Indeed this was by far the worst day of his life. Everyone ignored him. Nobody cared for him, not even his mom. He did not know what made them all change their behaviour towards him. Till yesterday, everybody was good to him. He could not remember if he had hurt anyone.
Thinking about his day, he reached the gates where he saw a small crowd gathered near his building . 'They must've been here for the funeral', he thought. Luke still did not know who died. But he was curious to know so he made a way through the crowd.
It was a young guy of his age lying in the coffin. He could not see his face from the distance. So he went a bit closer. He was shocked to see who it was.
Now he could relate everything what was happening to him and why it happened. He went to his mom who was sitting near the coffin still sobbing very badly. He even saw his sister comforting her.
Luke was helpless. He could not touch anyone nor anyone could see him. He heard someone talking to another person, "Poor Mrs. Collins, Luke was the apple of her eye. He was such a good son that one could ask for. May his soul rest in peace".
