The Building

by Teddy Kimathi
One late Friday afternoon, a couple went to search for the best place to have a passionate moment. It was a ritual practice for them during leisure time on Fridays and weekends. Tim and Sally held each other’s hands tightly as they raced with time, as it was about to be evening. They looked like kids going to play hide and seek.

It seemed that luck was on their side, when Tim spotted an old building in a remote compound. A feeling of uneasiness haunted Sally, when she saw long grass surrounding the compound, without any access or sight of any door. Cracked walls and worn out paint didn’t make her to feel any better.

“You are shaking like a leaf honey. Are you alright?” Tim asked.

“Yes… It’s just that I have a creepy feeling about this place,” Sally replied.

“I’m a belt holder of Harvard boxing competition, remember?”

Sally didn’t want to ruin Tim’s day by refusing to make out with him. She knew that he couldn’t wait for Friday to reach. She could tell with how he looked at her, and how he touched her more sensually as the week commenced.

Slowly they walked towards the building, avoiding barbed wires that might have been left wandering around by previous occupants. Trees’ shadows were gently moving towards the two lovebirds. Time was moving fast.

“Look! I can see something looking like a door’s handle!” Sally shouted.

“Please, quietly, someone might hear you,” Tim responded.

It was hard to recognize where the door was located, since it looked like a wall. Color of the wall blended in with the color of the door. Deep in her conscience, Sally felt as though the building wanted her to know where its door was located.

Their hands firmly held against each other, they cautiously crept towards the door. A secret passionate moment they had hoped for had turned into something else.

Tim sighed softly when they finally reached the building’s door. Sally could sense his anxiety as his right hand cautiously reached for the door’s knob. Both of them were terrified. The surrounding silence and a door eaten by termites had an eerie impression in their minds.

Feigning his bravery, Tim quickly opened the door without blinking! An old chair, old tables, lab jars, and a typewriter stared back at them. There was nothing close to romance about the room. It looked like a psychopath’s interrogation hide out, for torturing innocent victims.

“Let’s go back to our place,” Tim said.

Sally was surprised and relieved at the same time. She wondered why her boyfriend gave up that easily, for she knew him to be a risk fanatic.

As they turned to return to their abode, a photo drifting in the wind fell between the couple’s feet. Tim bent and picked it up. It was the photo of Professor Webber, an author and UFO researcher who had disappeared three weeks back. Some people believed that aliens abducted him.

A hunch made Sally to pick the photo and look behind it. “Don’t stay here. They are watching….” words read. Unimaginable fear suddenly appeared on Sally’s face, as her eyes slowly rolled to the skies.

“We shouldn’t have come here…..” she whispered.
