Is this what the rat race looks like?

My sister passed away recently after a tragic car accident and my family came from far and wide to attend her funeral. It was very interesting for me to observe them (as if from a distance) to discover who they are now or rather who they have become. I haven't seen most of them for periods ranging from between 2 and 15-20 years.

Here is what i have observed/discovered that most of them seemed trapped in the rat race, consumed by their quest for wealth and the accumulation of material things. They try hard to make themselves look (and from the looks of it), feel elevated above everyone else. I might be wrong, but it looks very difficult for them to constantly have to try to keep up appearances.

All their conversations revolves around their accomplishments and the wealth that they have accumulated, their fancy cars and big houses. Constantly trying to make everyone around them feel inferior and in so doing, to elevate their feelings of superiority. They find it difficult to associate freely with other people that also view themselves as superior, because they see them as the "competition" instead of family or potential friends.

After the event i am sitting here and can't help but, to wonder what they have achieved by bringing warmth to the person who passed away but, by being cold towards the people who still remain.
