Nasruddin owned piece of jewelry that was especially dear to him. It was an intricately carved gold ring that had been bequeathed to him 5 years ago by his grandfather on deathbed.Nasruddin was inordinately proud of his beautiful ring and never tired of recounting its history to whomever he met. Apparently the ring had been presented by a sultan of Persia nazim to one of his ancestors as a reward for meritorious service, and it had remained in the family ever since.
Over the years, everyone in the village had seen and admired Nasruddin ring ,and heard the story behind it. Among them was a man named Ismail, who was nasruddin childhood friend. Ismail secretly coveted the ring. But he knew very well that he stood no chance of ever getting his hands on it, as nasruddin could never be persuaded to part with his prized possession.
Finally, the fates seemed to smile on Ismailia wealthy relative of his died ,leaving a plot of farm land in a distant town. He decided to move there with his family to tend the land. As this involved leaving his native village for good. He went about bidding farewell to all his local friends and acquaintances.
Eventually the time came for him to take leave of Nasruddin .As he sat in the latter’s house, chatting with him an idea suddenly too root in his mind .Would it work he wondered .Anyway no harm in trying it out.
Tentatively he began ,Nasruddin do you remember the old days when we used to go school together. Indeed I do said Nasruddin with a nostalgic sigh. Those were good days. How much fun we had. We played so many games, wandered all over the village together. Yes said Ismail they were good days. Our friendship which began in our childhood continued all through our youth .But now alas .The time has come for us to part ways perhaps forever. Who if we will ever meet again .The words tapered off and the two friends sat in brooding silence.
Suddenly Ismail sat up straight as if he had just thought of something . Nasruddin he said I have an idea .what I really need is something to remember you by a Souvenir that will keep your memory eternally fresh in my mind .Why don’t you give me that ring of yours .That way I will remember you every time I look at it.
For a moment Nasruddin stared at his old friend silently apparently lost in thought. Ismail wondered how he was going to respond . Finally Nasruddin spoke up thoughtfully .That is a good of yours Ismail.
On hearing this Ismail eyes lit up was the canny fox for once cornered. But went on Nasruddin there is just one problem with it. What is that asked Ismail expectantly. No doubt you had remember me every time you see the ring explained Nasruddin .But have you considered what would happen if you were to lose it. You would forget me .No my friend that should not happen.
Nonplussed Ismail just stared at him. And so went on Nasruddin with a twinkle in his eye .I have an even better idea .How about this .I do not give you my ring that way every time that you look at your finger and do not see a ring . you will definitely remember me. Ismail realized that once again his old friend had outwitted him .Both the men burst into laughter.
