We as people need company no matter who we are because we are created like that. If Adam felt the loneliness because he is alone in the garden, we feel it too. In the book Frankenstein, also know “The Modern Prometheus”, is a novel Written by Mary Shelley (1797-1851).the story shifts between Victor Frankenstein’s point of view and the Creatures point of view. Mary Shelley showed the theme isolation and self-destruction throughout the novel not just physically, also emotionally. All character of the novel shows this theme. Victor Frankenstein became isolated and self-destruction from when his mother died, making his monster, to where the love of his life, Elizabeth, died. The Creature became isolated and self-destruction from when he escapes the laboratory, because he is hideous, to when Frankenstein died. Their isolation and self-destruction brought out the evil side of the character that caused them to do unspeakable things.

Shelley first introduces the idea of physical and emotional isolation though one of the main characters Victor Frankenstein. In chapter 3, things don’t go well in Frankenstein life. First Elizabeth got scarlet fever which put her life in danger, in the end, Elizabeth survived but Frankenstein’s mother catches it which led her to death. Second Frankenstein is leaving the life he knows in Geneva to attend the university at Ingolstadt. “I threw myself into the chaise that was to convey me away and indulged in the most melancholy reflections. I, who had ever been surrounded by amiable companions, continually engaged in endeavoring to bestow mutual pleasure- I was now alone. In the University whither I was going I must form my own friends and be my own protector” (Shelley, p.42).In this quote, it shows how isolated Frankenstein is. In chapter 4 and 6, Shelley shows the Idea of physical and emotional not only isolation, but also self-destruction “Every night I was oppressed by a slow fever, and I became nervous to a most painful degree; the fall of a leaf startled me, and I shunned my fellow creatures as if I had been guilty of a crime” (Shelley, p. 57). Frankenstein spent countless hours creating his Creature. This caused him to become sick and sleep deprived. He is so passionate about creating his Creature that he never leaves his place or has contact with other people. He never tells anyone about what he did that he became paranoid, he is trapped on his own mind.
Second, Shelley still uses the theme isolation and self-destruction on this character. “I found that I could not compose a female without again devoting several months to profound study and laborious disquisition” (Shelley. 181). The Creature requested to Frankenstein to have a female companion as ugly as him so they can be together. The Creature threatens Frankenstein’s life which put pressure to Frankenstein to create another Creature. This means he will be isolated and self-destruction again like what happened before and also be trap on his own thoughts. Now Shelley introduces isolation and self-destruction to another main character and shows it to the Creatures life. In chapter 12,”What chiefly struck me was the gentle manners of these people, and I longed to join them, but dared not. I remembered too well the treatment I had suffered the night before from the barbarous villagers, and resolved, whatever course of conduct I might hereafter think it right to pursue, that for the present I would remain quietly in my hovel, watching and endeavoring to discover the motives which influenced their actions”(Selley,p.128). The Creature is isolated because of how he looks. He is hideous and he looks like a monster. He is rejected by anyone who crosses his path. He is so curious about life, but he gets isolated if he approaches someone because they think that they will get hurt. This invalid him to make a relationship with someone
Third, The Creature’s life has been difficult for him since he escape the laboratory. This led him to self-destruction emotionally because he is an outcast and noting but a monster in the society. The society doesn’t him because he is a monster. He became isolated because of it and he blames Frankenstein for it. This will lead to the creature’s outrage. Through the novel, the creature becomes aware of the situation he is in. he knows what he looks like now and he knows why the society acting differently when they see him.” Increase of knowledge only discovered to me more clearly what a wretched outcast I was. I cherished hope, it is true, but it vanished when I beheld my person reflected in water or my shadow in the moonshine, even as that frail image and that inconstant shade” (Shelley, p. 156) this causes him to become angry and leading him to get revenge on Frankenstein. The Creature tried to be friend with the blind old man because he believes that the old blind man will accept him because he is blind, but he did not succeed.” I am an unfortunate and deserted creature, I look around and I have no relation or friend upon earth. These amiable people to whom I go have never seen me and know little of me. I am full of fears, for if I fail there, I am an outcast in the world forever” (Shelley, p.159) His isolation increased because of this which makes him angrier. The creature is completely alone and angry and his is blaming Frankenstein. This led the creature to do another unspeakable thing by getting revenge. In the end, both of the character felt the isolation and self-destruction. After Elizabeth and his father’s death, Frankenstein all wanted to do is get revenge to the creature that he created so he followed his creature all the way in the north. Frankenstein died afterward while boarding Walton’s boat. Destroyed and isolated the Creature board the boat to say his last goodbye to his creator, Frankenstein, before burring and destroying himself.
Being isolated and self-destruction can ruin a person’s life, we will feel something that can lead us to do sinister stuff. In the novel, the Creature get revenge on Frankenstein by killing Frankenstein’s loves ones because no one will accept the hideous monster. Frankenstein spent countless of hours creating his creature which make him isolated and self-destruction, and getting destroy because it’s too much.
