Hawa

On a dark night in Tamale, 10 children run across an abandoned football pitch. One by one, a dart struck each across the neck and they fell, before being dragged away by gloved hands. Their cries for help reached an old security guard who stumbled to his feet from his desk.

By the time he reached the pitch, he noticed a child being carried on the shoulders of a figure in bright red heels. This figure turned to glance at him before he felt a thin prick on his neck and a sweeping darkness enveloped him. The next morning he told his story to a female police officer the next morning.

She thanked him for his assistance and left on her motorcycle. At her police station, a woman in a wheelchair. 'So Hawa, she asked, 'is this her doing?'

'Yes, Fatima. The kidnapping bears the modus operandi of the red lady. The red lady was an urban myth about a supernatural lady in red high heels and a red dress who kidnapped children. However the people of the North were not very superstitious.

'The children taken were begging on the road, in clear violation of labour and road safety laws.' she contnued. 'Their parents are being questioned right now. However the lack of forced entry into the stadium and the speed of the kidnappings suggets that an organised team, possibly military is behind this'.

'I'll crosscheck the files of military activities with the beginning of the abductions.' noted Fatima.

In an old abndoned warehouse, several well dressed women examined 10 bound and gagged children. Satisfied with their condition, they placed 10 duffel bags on a wooden bench and drove away with the children. Five minutes later, five women led by a woman clad in red stepped out of the shadows and opened the bags.

Each bag contained millions of Ghana cedis. 'Alright, the leader noted, the next job takes place in 2 days and the targets are 20 schoolchildren. Our client deals in the black market for internal organs which means the payoff will be huge. You will split up into two groups and kill anyone who poses a threat to the mission'

She holstered two Berretas. 'In the meantime, there's someone I have to dispose off'.

At a military base in Sunyani, Hawa studied a bulky brown file about Unit 57. Unit 57, one of the best military units in the nation, had been dispatched to Tamale upon rumours of an impending ethnic conflict. However it had turned out to be just a rumour.

'General Kwansaa, Hawa said, addressing an old woman sitting across the table from her, 'this unit's arrival coincides directly with the kidnappings. I would like to question them'

'I'm afraid that's impossible, said the general sadly. 'They died two days after they arrived here' she sighed before handing her a large black file. She opened it and noted that the unit was heading back to base when a drunk trotro driver collided with them killing both parties immediately.

The blood tests and eyewitness reports confirmed their demise but Hawa still had her doubts. As she left the building, she received a short text message. 'Come to the old shrine behind the military base for more answers about Unit 57,' it read. She called for backup before heading for the shrine.

Long abandoned by the previous inhabitants of the land, it was overgrown with weeds. She had barely walked past the entrance when a bullet grazed her left cheek. She rolled for cover behind a tree and returned fire in the direction of the shot. A distant figure clutched its left shoulder and retreated on her right.

Hawa gave chase, brushing aside the tall grass in front of her. By the riverside, the red clad woman spun around and took aim but Hawa was faster, lunging at her and sending them both into the water. Beneath its surface, both women drew their pistols at each other, until they realised that this was futile.

They raised their weapons above the watery surface, and held their breath knowing that the first one to rise for air would be shot. A strange sense of calm and a floating sensation filled Hawa as she was faintly reminded of her kindergarten days. Back then, she had proudly announced that she would be a policewoman and keep everybody safe.

She had smiled broadly as the class erupted with applause and cheers and she smiled faintly now as she sunk to the depths of the river, her eyes slowly closing. Her eyes shot wide open again as even more water filled her lungs. Not far from her, the shooter also drifted downwards, her left shoulder still bleeding.

With herculean effort, she swum towards her, grabbed her by the shoulders and swum up for air. Hawa dumped the woman formerly known as Lieutenant Frema, was sent to a police hospital at 4:00 pm. Police surrounded Rose estates and handcuffed several well dressed women and escorted the children to safety.

Mirekua's unit tried to flee but 8 military units and the police trained their weapons on them, forcing them to surrender. In the evening, Hawa closed the Red lady file in her office and slowly typed her final report on the
