Esi

In the year 2005, fifteen BNI (Bureau of National Investigation) stealthily approached a clearing in the middle of a forest reserve, where an old woman and 8 children knelt in prayer. After the prayers were said, the woman rose to her feet.

'Children, your reports, please'.

Each child walked over to her, handing her phone records, logging records and pictures of local company buildings in the nation. The BNI agents sprung out of the bushes, brandishing their guns and demanded that everyone raise their hands above their heads. The old woman dove to her right, seized a shaven headed child and raised a knife to her throat.

'Put the guns down or else I'll slit her throat'

The BNI agents began to lay down their arms when a loud shot was heard from behind her. The woman collapsed to the ground, her face drawn in disbelief as blood oozed from the back of her right shoulder. 5 of the agents detained her and BNI agent Ewurama led the others in searching the forest for the shooter but to no avail.

On the 6th of March, 2014, a woman with a shaven head worked on a stone carving of a woman and a little girl, polishing it till it shone and placing it with the other statues covered by sheets of rubber.

The door to the entrance was pushed open, ringing an overhead bell. Esi turned around to recognise a fellow survivor of the events of 2005, BNI Agent Ekua.

After Esi gave her a glass of water, Ekua downed it in one gulp and straightened her jacket. 'Esi, do you remember when I shot that old witch who threatened to slit your throat?'

'I'll never forget it. I owe you a great debt'.

'Well, its time you paid me back. Akos was training us to training us to carry out acts of aggression against local businesses but in the past two weeks, I have discovered that someone is planning a series of attacks against this country today. I need you to speak to a suspect and a fellow survivor of our past ordeal. A woman named Owusuwaa'.

Esi took a deep breath when she packed her car outside Owusuwaa's house. She was one of Esi's best clients and seemed incapable of harming anybody. She stepped out of the car and rang the doorbell. Owusuwaa stepped out and helped Esi move one of the statues out of the car.

Owusuwaa placed the statue in her study, uncovered it and rubbed the face. 'It's very nice'.

'Thank you'

Owusuwaa took a seat. 'Things haven't been easy for me for the past few days. My transport bus company has recorded more losses than gains so recently...recently I gave my buses to some questionable characters to use. I demanded payment at first, of course.'

Esi thought deeply. 'Ekua told me the buses might be used to transport those who would harm local businesses today. I'll have to ask for more details with some tact'.

Suddenly Owusuwaa began to sweat profusely and slump in her seat. Esi reached for her hand but noticed that it was becoming discoloured. Suddenly BNI agents knocked the door off its hinges and brandished their guns at Ekua. They bound her quickly and medical personnel examined Owusuwaa and the statues.

Ewurama sighed, 'I'm disappointed in you, Esi. When I led my women to rescue you, Ekua and Owusuwaa, we never imagined that you would turn against this country.'

'Excuse me, madam.' said one of the medical personnel. 'The statue was covered with a thin layer of poison, similar to the other statues in her shop.'

We have a recording of your voice authourising an attack on 20 local businesses today'. Ewurama concluded.

'Listen to me', insisted Esi, 'Only one person could have handled these operations and set me up. BNI agent Ekua. She's shooter you were looking for 9 years ago".

Five red buses exited a highway and each headed straight for a large building. Suddenly five 4 by 4 vehicles pulled up in front of each bus as officers exited the vehicles and aimed their guns at the drivers. The BNI agents forcefully boarded the buses and detained the thugs and seized their weapons.

Ekua watched the arrests on the morning news in the safety of a hotel room. There was a knock on the door. She holstered her gun and looked through the peephole. A maid with a cleaning kit stood outside. She exhaled and opened the door, when suddenly the maid was shoved aside and Esi shot Ekua in the neck with a tranquiliser dart.

Several agents went into the hotel and arrived to meet Esi and an unconscious Ekua. The BNI agents took her away in a BNI bus. Ewurama watched the bus leave. ' We'll see that she's properly rehabilitated.'

'What about those who helped her poison the statues and falsify that recording?'

'We've detained them as well. We seem to have a shortage of trustworthy agents at the moment. Would you be interested in a job opening at the BNI, Esi?'

Esi was silent for a moment. 'I'll consider it.'
