Akyeaa: Chapter 5

by safohen
Panin Ntim, Fosuaa and Akyeaa sat on one of the park benches and watched as the Sankofa bird pecked the ground for earthworms.

'How long has it been here?' asked Akyeaa.

'Two hours' replied Ntim. 'It is believed to be an immortal reminder to humanity that they should not hesitate to recover the good values of the past. To learn from past mistakes in order to avoid future ones. It's immortal nature makes me afraid.'

'Afraid? Why?' asked Fosuaa.

'Because I'm two hundred and thirty-five years old and I can't stop thinking of ripping its head off and drinking its blood! Because that might make me immortal!. But if I do that, I will lose my humanity, the very thing that makes me...well, me.'

'I know you, Ntim' Akyeaa said softly. 'You would never do something like that'.

'No, you don't!' , he snapped. 'People are capable of the sick and twisted if it serves their self interest. There are no exceptions to that rule. This bird came here to rest, before continuing its flight around the world. You two will keep it safe where no-one, myself included, can find it'.

He took in deep breaths and wiped beads of sweat from his brow. 'I'm sorry I snapped. I believe in the balance between life and death. We live our lives trying to be all we can be. Then we die, continuing our work in the ancestral plains. That's how the world works.

'Being immortal might not only change one's character but offset this balance. worse, cause one to be a mass murderer, going from place to place, taking lives to maintain one's immortality, or worse, damage the universe.'

'And you've entrusted us with this task?' asked Fosuaa.

'I trust that you will guide Akyeaa into becoming a good person first, a champion second. I know that you two will keep an eye on each other, ensuring that neither of you kills the bird.'

After they left the park, the two women agreed to keep it in Akyeaa's old underground library. A haven where she had learnt ancient Ghanaian battle arts, honour and morals.

'Truth be told', admitted Fosuaa, 'I'm more advanced in years and thus, more likely to attack it than you. It's safer in your library than in my counselling hut.'

Akyeaa sealed the doors shut. 'Would you like to come with me to Mountain Djato, close to the edge of the village, Fosuaa?'

'Sure. It's peaceful and quiet. It helps me to think.'

'I think we both need some time to reflect on what Ntim said'.
