What is maturity

by Sharmishtha Shenoy

On a lighter vein, maturity is  . . . . . When you start eating Bhindi,
Teendy, karelay without nakhrey..

Roughly translated it means that you become mature when you
can eat the vegetables you hated as a child without any tantrums.

Now the question is why did you hate these vegetables as a
child, but now eat them without any fuss?

It is because, you are now mature enough to understand that
these vegetables need to be eaten for ensuring good health. Now why did you not
care about good health before? Because most of us never suffer from bad health
as children. As we age, we start suffering from diseases like diabetes, heart
problems etc. or we go through the pain of seeing our near and dear ones
suffering from diseases and understand the importance of good health.

Maturity comes with experience,
after one has suffered pain.

Maturity is when you stop wasting time on social media.

Maturity is when you would make time to attend a funeral and
comfort the stakeholders than attend a party. Maturity is when you realize that
religions should not be politicized and Ishwar, Allah and Christ are one and
same. Maturity is when you take care of your priority becomes giving rather
than taking. Maturity is calling your elderly relatives and acquaintances to just
spend some time talking to them and making them feel wanted.

So what is the relationship between maturity and age?

A 10 year old can be mature beyond her age while a fifty
year old can be totally immature. It all depends on the environment we are
growing up in, the company we have, the struggle we face in our daily lives.

A truly mature person often realizes that learning
is a never ending process. He would often talk less and listen more, be kind ,
compassionate, and gracious. A mature person is responsible, flexible and
non-judgemental because he has seen enough of this world to realise that jumping
to conclusions is easy when one does not know what is behind other people’s lives.
They believe in the motto, “Before you assume, learn the facts. Before you
judge, understand why. Before you hurt someone, feel. Before you speak, think.”
