The Higglers

THE HIGGLERS
A Poem
by Austin Mitchell

Friday evening they went to town
Their baskets full of produce
To sell in town
Real country produce

They had to sleep on the plazas
But by morning they had to be awake
To sell on the plazas
But for most of the night they had to be awake

To stop people stealing their goods
They had to make a profit from these goods
To help their families
And then they had to go home to their families

These higglers braving these cold sidewalks
To sell Downtown
To huddle up at nights on those sidewalks
As they braved the perils of Downtown

The chief benefactors were their children
And what became of those children
Is a testament to their hard work
And those children now know the benefit of hard work
