Thing in The Mirror

by ThePaleBear
“My name is Clara Reynolds; I am a paralegal in Edwards & Harts law firm and this is my final testimony. For many weeks I have been slowly losing my mind, or rather I hope I am…
Possibility that I may be right, it is inconceivable. It all began in May 13th 2009, I recall being late to a meeting, though I remember why. On that cursed day I have seen the devil. I see it light as day, oh so I wish I could forget it, shutting off the faucet I looked into the bathroom mirror to refresh my makeup to some Thing looking back at me. For a moment I saw a little girl in a grey dress, but it was not so, just like the vile creatures of old tales it changed, it changed into something I yearn never to relive. Then just as sudden as it came Thing disappeared, maybe it was my desperate shriek or water overflowing to bathroom floor that caused the Thing distress. I blamed it to that scary movie I watched the night before, surely it must have been my imagination playing tricks on me. There is no such thing as monsters, is there oh silly me. Even after my feeble justification of the events, an odd survival instinct forced me to check all the bathroom stalls, with my hands trembling I slowly pushed away all the doors. Thank god they were all empty but one sealed as out of order for I would not have any other soul share the torment that bloody Thing inflicted upon me.

After an aloof meeting and couple of days I had all but forgotten what happened, funny how your mind alters your reality away from horrors of yesterday. On May 21 I was brushing my teeth, getting ready to go to bed when I saw it again. This time a short man in a mask, a burglar sneaking in my apartment, but it was not so. Thing removed its mask to reveal its face, with scars running along its forehead and chin, some kind of spikes embedded forcefully into its cheeks horribly infected, leaking blood and puss down from its neck. Thing looked me in the eyes through the mirror, but it had no eyes just two empty eye sockets with a rotten interior. After taking a few steps closer to me it opened its mouth, toothless, black bile dripping from its lips, Thing started to speak in a voice I can only describe as unholy “help me!” it said spitting. My words escaped me, how do you answer when the living dead asks for your help? I mustered my courage and turned around, to an empty apartment, cold gust of wind blew open my window, took me a while to feel cold in my terrorized state.

All night I searched my apartment for any signs of intruders and found none. Sleep did not come since; I sat on my sofa until Sol rise with its warm light. Managing to collect my wits I ran to my next-door neighbor Sally whom I speak to from time to time and told her everything. As I spoke her disbelief to my memories became apparent to me. Thanking her I left, now I had to prove myself, I ran to the mirror gazing into it… And just as I hoped Thing was gazing back to me, again as a little girl in a pretty green dress it hopped closer chuckling “You should not have done that!” its voice got higher suddenly it turned around and opened my door. Sally walked pass the Thing not perceiving it hiding behind the door, I froze up in terror, and my hands started shaking. “Look I really want to help you why don’t we talk some more.” Sally said but the Thing pounced at her from the back as it transformed it rotated around Sally and she fell backwards on the floor. “You should have helped ME!” it screamed its voice shifting from a girly scream to a guttural growl between each word “You will help ME!” I could not let it harm Sally! I opened the mirrored cabinet looking for something to use, behind some vials I found my nail file. I grabbed it and shut the cabinet with such force it shattered the mirror. Between cracked glass mirror the Thing was coming for me, now covered in blood of poor Sally. No longer could I tolerate it toying with me, no more could I live in fear for my life and I could never let it harm my friends! So I turned around to face my demon. Expecting a greater foe I charged straight to the beast with all my strength, I could hear Sally screaming behind the Thing, it stumbled for a moment, a moment was all I needed to stab it. Thing screamed in pain, but Sally’s cries for help overpowered the beast, I started to repeatedly attack the Thing, with each stab blood gushed out furiously from its wounds. I kept stabbing long after it fell and only stopped when my arm started cramped up causing me to lose grip of my weapon. Thing lay there motionless, but I was too late Sally was laying near the door covered in blood. I tried walking towards her to help but lost my footing and fell to the bloody floor. To my surprise the Thing managed to crawl up to my leg “I will have YOU!” it screamed its voice still shifting, it slowly disappeared, and as it faded from sight I could feel an unsettling tingle on my leg. Now covered in blood of my foe I am writing this letter. I know it somehow took my body, I can feel it moving inside me. I cannot let it harm any other innocents so I shall take my own life to end this evil once and for all. I hope my sacrifice will be enough to keep it forever away. I intend to stab myself just as I finish writing…”

On May 22 police have responded to a call made by the neighbors reporting a struggle and a screaming female. Units have found a murdered female, identified as Sally Nightingale by the landlord. And a suicide letter was found near the door referring to the tenant Clara Reynolds. No other body was founded at the crime scene. Two days later another stabbing has occurred at Edwards & Harts law firm witnesses report Clara Reynolds arriving there in bloodied clothes and as the security guard tried to assist her she suddenly stabbed him, all the while screaming “She was WRONG!” in the ensuing chaos Clara Reynolds managed to escape…
