The stained glass window

by Jessica Williams
Sam Whittaker used to pass a house with a stained glass window on the second floor. Sam would look up and wonder who lived there. One evening, there was a lady at the window holding a glass of bubbly. She was wearing a pink house coat. She drank the bubbly down, and disappeared back into darkness. Sam intended to ask her out. He had pots of money and he was sick of spending it on his own. The lady appeared to be single, or so he hoped!

Sam rang her bell one evening. He received a sharp cry through the intercom: “Please refrain from ringing my bell”! A woman in a huge, floppy hat and navy Macintosh came from the house. She shook her finger at Sam and said: “That was you, wasn’t it”? Sam replied: “Sorry, I got the wrong house”. The woman, whose name was Janet, replied: “Well that’s fine, but who are you”? Sam told her that he was a technical officer and then risked asking her out. He said: “Janet, I have great respect for your stained glass window. Will you go on a date with me”? To Sam’s great surprise, Janet said “Yes”. She then added, “I know a jolly good wine bar in Putney. We shall meet here at 8:00 pm this Friday”.

The date went really well. Janet was wearing a green, satin dress and green stilettos. Sam wore a black and white chequered suit, with black shoes. They shared two nice bottles of wine and arranged another date for the following Friday. The date fell on Halloween. Sam rang Janet’s bell. She came out holding a broomstick. Sam assumed she was just dressed up for Halloween and held the taxi door open for her with an amused smile. Janet screamed: “Don’t think this is all going to be so easy for you”! She suddenly jumped onto her broomstick and disappeared into the night sky.
