Chapter 2 after the nightmare
“Wake up John, the school wont wait forever.” Mom yells from outside my bedroom door. I sigh and I get up, the dreams from last night were so confusing, something is up and yet I can figure out what.
I get dressed in a long sleeve black shirt and bleached denim jeans with black sneakers and I get started on filling up my messenger bag with my stuff and then I get out of the house before I have to deal with mom. I get into my truck and I start it up, when I look into the rear view mirror I see this man with a short buzz cut and his hair color is black, he is wearing an all black suit and he is smiling, revealing what looks like long fangs that glitter in the sunlight. I get shaken up by this man but as soon as I blink my eyes just once he's gone. Huh I wonder if I was seeing things. Anyway I pull out of the driveway and I get on my way to school.

Driving, listening to music, anything that keeps me from my classmates and my mom are some of the many things that keep my sanity in check and keeps me from breaking down in tears- for what it was in the past, I'm happy actually with the present moments in my life.
Flashback Begins-
“Hey look Randy, theres the freak!” Hank yelled as I walked into the classroom for history. I look down at the floor and I walk to my desk and I sit down. I hate my life. Nothing seems to go right and I feel so alone. Nothing makes me more happier than death coming after my life. What reason do I have? To live is to die and with me to live is unknown for me. Happiness left when I was born, just like mom said I'm just a problem that everyone- including myself needs to deal with. As I get my binder out for class, I felt a paper ball hit my head and I see it on the floor. I just ignore it. For my sake it could be just killer words that will just make things past the number zero on how good or bad things could be for my day. As always Mr. Steinbeck walks in and I see him sigh as he looks passed me.
“Randy as much as I would like to see you with a football, I really actually dont so if youll take out your book and your homework and get started with todays class- I'd actually have a peaceful period with you today.” Mr. Steinbeck said quietly, then looking at me. He just shook his head and turned his back and looked at the chalk board and started talking about the cause and affect with the battle at Gettysburg. Things suck major. No friends, no parents and no life to live but death- yes I live in it. Forever and always.

I walk on to the bus and I sit in a seat alone. Nothing made sense to me, I just want to be loved and yet theres just isolation and as well as self-isolation in my life. Looking at the passing land on this world as the bus driver drives down the road and stopping everytime to drop students off at their bus stops for them to go back to their loving families. As for me- a freaky eighth grader that has white hair and blood red eyes just cant fit in. No matter what, its just the way it is.

I walk into the house and I go straight upstairs and into my room. I throw my things on to the floor and fall on to the bed. I wonder what it would be like if death just invited me to his world? What would it be like? Would death accept me? Or will he just turn his back on me too? I close my eyes and I fall into a deep sleep and I open my eyes, seeing a little girl thats in front of the end of the bed. She stared at me in silence and walked over to me and took my hand.
“I'm inviting you- to be in a world of love and peace.” She says. Ok I'm confused. I wanted death not a kid. I stare at her blankly and she sighs.
“You said you wanted love and to be accepted, right?” The little girl asked. I nodded silently. I then stand up and I look at her opening the door and theres a bright shining white light coming from outside my bedroom. I smile without thinking. This happiness made me filled with reasons- reasons that I never thought I'd have to live. This is my fate. I walk into the light and after walking in the life. I open my eyes and I see darkness. Its nighttime and I'm laying on the bed alone and feeling empty again. What was that? Who was the little girl? I sit up and I walk over to the lamp on my desk and turn it on. Then walking to my backpack I get started with my homework and I just try to distract myself with work.
“It'll get better son.” A voice calls out. I look around, knowing its a spirit around here in my room. But I dont see it. What is going on?
Flashback Ends-
I remember- everytime I went into those depressions I thought of it- I thought of death and everytime I slept without the nightmares coming to me, I saw the little girl and she gave me a bit of hope after going into the light. The pain faded and I was able to smile. Nothing was better than seeing the little girl. Why you ask? It's because she showed me that death wasn't for me. Life is still here and I needed to see it for myself, no matter what I'll find love and acceptance someday.

I pull into the parking lot of the school and I park the truck and get out, walking out and into the school I see people looking at me in a strange way, as always. They just don't get what I go through when they do this to me. When I see them I just want to run and hide because I dont wanna deal with the mumbling and the looks from the faces of the normal people. As I walk to my first class which is art I feel something bump my head. I look behind me and I see a piece of paper on the floor by my feet. I open it up and there's a note on it.
“Hey John, I was hoping to see how you were! I'll be seeing you after school.
Sincerely,
your Fate.
I sigh and throw the piece of paper in the garbage can in the art classroom where I don't have to read it again.
“Ok guys, we are going to be working on self portraits and this will be only a sketch because after that we'll be using water colors on them and having an art show in the school towards the end of your last year.” Said Mr. Web said as he closes the door and gets us to pass along art pads for us to sketch out ourselves.
As I am sketching out an image of myself I then look out the window and just as fate wants to screw me over, I see the same guy that I saw in my trucks rear view mirror. He is glaring at me with jet black eyes and there's blood on his lips and falling down to his chin. It scares me but I can't show it because it'll just make things worse with me and the people from the school. I then plainly ignore it and continue with my sketch work. The last thing I need is seeing monsters that normal people don't see. Ok John let's get this done!

The bell rings and I put my art pad away then fly out of there since half the people were just giving me the evil eye and it looked like they were trying to follow me whenever I had to get something. As I walked down the hallway for physics, I see Fate arguing with Randy and for the first time I felt sorry for someone. She is Randy's girlfriend and yet she is the only sweet person in the school. But just for the sake of not getting into trouble with anyone, I ignore it and rush to physics where I spend the rest of the day both ignoring people and needing to get the day over and done with.

I’m in AP calculus and all I can think about is that dream from last night. What was that about? I see the clock ticking down to the last moment to the end of the school day and then Ding! Thank god that school is now over!
I walk to my locker and grab my things when Randy’s girlfriend, Fate shows up and smiles.
“Hey Johnny boy.” Fate says softly. I sigh and look back at my locker.
“What is it now Fate? You know Randy is going to kill me if I get seen with you.” I say trying to push her away, trying not to look like I’m trying to get close to people who know that I see dead people.
“Oh come on Johnny! You know I’m not like Randy; I like you a lot and the thing is…” she says but gets cut off when Randy shows up.
“What the hell Fate? Why are you here with that freak?” He asks. I just ignore and try and run for the hills, but Fate catches me just at the worst possible moment.
“I’m going out with John now, so just mind your own business Randy!” She shouts at him.
“Well I guess I won’t be so nice at the coming up prom now huh?” He asks looking at me and cracking his knuckles.
“Watch yourself Randy I can still kick your ass if I want.” Fate warns.
“Ooh Fate I’m shaking, what you going to do? Spank me?” He asks picking on her and she ends up snapping at him but she then does the most surprising move; she punches him in the face so hard that he ends up on the floor and everyone that watched that laughs at him.
“I guess you’re not so tough Randy; come on John, let’s go before his dumb friends show up.” She says pulling me away and outside the building.
“Wow.” I say and that’s all I could be able to say.
“My dad’s a cop and Randy knows that, but he always seems to push me past my limits.” Fate says, just aggravated.
“I can’t blame you but I’m horrible at defending myself. I just end up getting my ass kicked.” I say sighing in annoyance. She looks and smiles.
“I’ll help with that, how about we hang out this Friday and I’ll teach you how to defend yourself?” She asks quietly. I smile and laugh.
“Yeah sure I’m off from work on Fridays anyway.” I say. She laughs loudly.
“Cool it’s a date! Well better be off; I’ll see you tomorrow ok?” She asks. I nod ok and head over to my truck and drive out of the parking lot and head back home where my mom diamond lays in dormant sleep until her dumb boyfriends come over to ‘talk’.
I can’t stand this, they’ve been going at it for over an hour and I can’t even concentrate on my homework! I’m so tempted to kill them right now that it’s not even funny. Then after over an hours’ worth of sex, the silence kicks in and I hear the door open and I hear her giggle her ass off with a guy who growls like a mad dog.
“Here’s a little tip for my good little girl.” He says like he even can tell that he sounds like a sex offender.
“Oh baby, thank you for that I must have really rocked your world today.” She says in a slutty tone. He laughs and starts targeting me since I’m her ‘spawn’.
“So where’s the kid of yours? Isn’t he in high school?” He asks sighing like he feels bad for making me hear them act like the characters from ‘Tarzan’ in the middle of the deserted jungle.
“Oh come on sweetie! Let’s not bring up the brat.” She says just wanting to kill me for being known by her clientele.
“Well he’s still your son, Katie; I know dealing with the money issues and not having anyone to help out with your son is hard but just stop ignoring him already! Do it for me please?” He asks her. She sighs then replies back.
“Ok, but only for you, ok?” She asks quietly then he laughs quietly.
“Thank you Hun; hey listen before I take off, I got something in the car for John mind if I give it to him?” He asks, wait a minute; he- a man of my mom’s- has something for me? I’m going to lock my bedroom door and pretend I’m on mars; because last time I got something it was a playboy magazine!
“John! Stephen has something for you, come out please.” Mom hollers outside my door.
“Coming!” I yell back. Please god; don’t let it be playboy!
I walk outside the house and next to Steve’s car where I see something nobody but my dad got and now my mom uses it because she just decided to adopt mine since she started writing her work of erotic and horror stories as a professional writer (I know but it’s not just screwing guys she does she also writes with major publishers too.)
“Hey kid! I was talking to your mom one day and she said you do graphic art and what she mentioned was that you write as well, so I got some money together and bought you a laptop.” He says smiling. I smile back and thank him for what he had just gotten.
“It’s no big deal, I know what it’s like not to have much on you in life; I had a hard time as a kid too and for the longest time I had wanted to make toys for kids that well had none; and now I have a business that does this for kids all over the world. I hope you have your dreams fulfilled too son.” He says then gives me a hug. I hug him back and watch him get into his car.
“I’ll see you again soon Stephen.” Mom says smiling and waving at him as he pulls out of the driveway and drives off. I look at her and she looks at me.
“Can we talk inside?” Mom asks. I nod and walk inside with her, when she slaps me across the face.
“You son of a bitch, you act like you’re better than me and that you can take Stephen away like he’s your own dad. You only had a dad once and guess what? He left us both! Would you want to read the letter again? I saved it just to remind you who actually lets you have a roof over your head!” She screams out in my face. All I am is silent and I walk to my room.
“Don’t you walk away boy.” She demands. I stop and turn to face her.
“Why, so you can hit me again? I won’t take a chance on that.” I say turning my back against her and going to my room so I can get ready for work.
I’m walking back home from work after begging my other co-workers to let me stay with them for the night but they all said ‘NO’ so I’m bummed out and kind of pissed that even though they know my mom hits me and treats me like a disgrace they still won’t help me out.
I walk down the roads, curving my way down pathways long burned into my memory. I turn the corner onto the worn down road but something is different about the usually vacant route. Along the rows of abandoned houses, Men stand in formation along either side of the pavement. Their eyes dead set on the man opposite and their hands shaped into balls.
A man stands at the end of the road nearing towards the left side. “Kill the bastards” was all he said before utter chaos breaks out.
The men on both sides charge at each other with their teeth barred and their voices loud. They collide in the middle as loud crashes ring through the air. A man with dark red hair grabs his opponent by the shoulders before pinning him down to the ground. With swift and graceful movements, he dips his head down to the other man’s neck. A harsh scream pierces through the air from the weaker man’s mouth. He struggles for a while until his flailing limbs suddenly become heavy and drop to the ground.
The stronger man raises his head from his prey’s body and I see blood trailing down his chin. It drips onto the ground in innocence like it could be rain, like no wrong has just happened. He sets his eyes on me. I feel them burn into my soul as his lips curl up and show his teeth.
The life source coats them I see as he walks menacingly towards me. My heart beat picks up as the pupils of his eyes change from a pitch black to a fire red. A growl escapes from his lips making the blood in his mouth gurgle and blood drops to fly from his mouth.
I try to think of the animal documentaries I’ve watched. They say it’s best to back out slowly, so that’s exactly what I did. I placed my foot behind the other before allowing my weight to shift slowly. The man doesn’t seem to like this and lunges at me. With his mouth wide open mid-roar and his fingers stretched like claws, he flies through the air to meet me. I brace myself for the impact by closing my eyes tight and taking in a deep breath. I wanted to remember what it felt like to breath.
The impact never came. The wild roar that headed towards me was suddenly cut off before it could reach me. I cautiously open my eyes to see a proud looking man standing before me.

Democracy was theoretically a system of political and legal equality. But in concrete and practical terms, it was inadequate. There could be no equality in politics and before the law as long as there were glorying economic inequalities.
