Supi Ami: Chapter 4

by safohen
When one is faced with several opponents in a dark forest on a muddy footpath, there are two options. Fight or flee. Supi Ami did not believe in fleeing. So as nineteen of )konore's priestesses charged at her, she unstrapped the ekyem from her back and flung it at two of them, knocking them down.

She fired eight arrows at eight priestesses, each arrow catching them in the knee, and flung two spears at two others, pinning them to the trees. The others hesitated, stunned by the brutality of her attacks, and then decided to flee.

They arrived at the haven by sunrise and explained the situation to the high priestess. She was not pleased.

'Did you at least make sure she didn't follow you here?' she enquired.

They exchanged nervous glances.

'We're not really sure'.

The Supi suddenly darted out of the shadows, brushed the nine aside with three swings of her afena and seized )konore. In the distance, the beat of wardrums began.

'Call off the warpriestesses and I won't hurt you" Ami whispered.

'I'm afraid I can't do that. Regardless of what happens to me, fifty warpriestessess will raid this hut in thirty minutes. That was the agreement reached between me and the other highpriestessess. Just in case one of us found herself in this particular situation.'

'Then we'll just have to take a little walk back to the palace now, won't we?'

The warpriestessess burst into the hut five minutes later but Ami and )konore were nowhere to be found.

A tall, dark police officer stood next to the )kyeame (linguist) of chief Hawa in the courtyard of her palace. She had been standing there for hours telling her about the missing priestesses. Now the )kyeame felt she had to respond to her queries. Especially since the chief was 'unavailable'.

'We have no hand in the disappearances of the priestessess, Bediako. '

'That's what you said about the nightclub incident. Witnessess said it was a priestess who attacked the people but you claimed it was simply a lunatic high on cocaine. '

'We have records that show she was a drug user and has a history of savage violence against nightclub patrons. You do recall that the central government has granted us the power to tackle certain cases that fall within our traditional area, if we express interest in them.'

'Yes, one of your novel ideas by Chief Hawa. To increase the sense of traditional power in these modern times. I don't know whether the government agreed to this to get more votes or not. What I do know is that you people have a situation and need our help'.

'Chief Hawa told me to inform you that she has everything under control'.

'Where is she anyway? No-one has seen her for days, not even at the recent ancestral festival which was held yesterday.'

'She's at a month long special retreat for royals'.

'Really?'

'Of course, why would I lie to you?'

'Alright, I'll take my leave now.' she sighed as she turned to leave. ' But )kyeame Abiba, if your situation gets out of hand and endangers any more people, the Ghana Police Force will be forced to intervene, whether Hawa likes it or not. Good day.'

Abiba sighed as she watched Bediako go. 'Great ancestresses, forgive me for the lies I've told this day.'

'I'm sure it was neccessary' remarked a familiar voice.

Abiba spun around to find an exhausted Ami with a sleeping highpriestess slung over her shoulder.

'How long have you been there?'

'Long enough for me to hear about the missing priestesses. There's only one person with the resources and the motive to do this. The Tufohen. She only took the position because of the power it would bring her. She's probably , interrogating them in the abandoned Yiwan (blade) witch camp.'

In the afternoon, Fafa and the other members of Afena stood guard at the Yiwan witch camp, ignoring the screams of its new inmates as the Tufohen interrogated them. She had insisted on doing it alone. One session had been enough for Fafa. She couldn't wait for her to be done so that she could leave this experience behind her . Forever.

Fafa froze as she felt more than saw someone move in the shadows.

'Who is it?' Show yourself' she ordered.

'Hello, Fafa.' Ami smiled as she stepped out of the shadows. 'I came to talk to the former Tufohen.

Edufa stepped out of an efiase cell marked '1000' and sighed.

'One thousand suspects and yet still no answers, eh?' asked Ami.

'What are you doing here, Ami?'

'I should be asking you that question. Abducting priestessess and torturing them in a closed down witch camp are serious offences, my former Tufohen.'

'What's that supposed to mean?'

'It means that my asafo' Ami explained as she snapped her fingers and ten asafo companies stepped forward,' are taking you into custody and we're going to let all the innocent people go. '

'How do you know they're innocent?'

'Because the dangerous priestesses are beating a retreat after I captured High Priestess )konore. Back to protect the remaining two.'

'You can't do this. You don't have the authority.'

'That was conferred on me by the elders this afternoon. It's not the first time we've removed a master of arms in absentia.'
