Night In My Window

by Joyce Wolayo

A look through my window curtains late at night can be both entertaining and fearsome some times.
On rainy nights it’s terrifying and thunderous since I can easily see the dark sky flashed in rays of orange and blue lightning bolts. On these nights I can only glimpse at the sky briefly and then quickly dive back into my warm blanket.

However on non rainy days at night through my window is awesomely calm and quite except for the constant flow of cars on the road. This road speaks a soft language of its own as cars sway and cruise through when it’s lucky to have sober drivers.

Otherwise on unlucky nights it is common to hear a crushing sound on pavement that indicates a new accident resulting from wreckless driving.
Some times it’s the dire sound of the end of life on the road when a car has collided with the wrong object thus making it turn over and in consequence killing all of its occupants.

This road is even more dangerous during the day as it holds the blood of many deceased innocent victims of the tragedies of modern behavior like drunken driving.

Victims of crime also fall to their deaths on this road when attacked by armed robbers or rapists late in the night. I look at this road fearfully as if it was a silent snake left to its rest. It crawls with so many different faces.
The worst was when I witnessed the murder of an innocent young woman.

I had a hot steamy bath that night, feeling fresh and ready for sweet dreams.

I went straight to bed but instead spent the next two hours talking to my boy friend on the phone.

I sent him a sexy sweet romantic message revealing my position in bed at that moment which excited him as he replied me with even more raunchy, electrifying and sultry messages that kept me wide awake in bed for longer than I had anticipated.

The house became quite as the last person switched off all the lights in the house that had kept it bright till now. I became thirsty thinking my dear Romeo had suddenly made me feel hungry and thirsty as if I hadn’t eaten supper that night. I got out of bed and went to the kitchen where I opened the fridge for some cold water. I couldn’t eat anything or drink tea at this time. So I pulled up a chair and sat while gulping down lots of cold water that helped cool my warm stomach that acted as if it was hungry. It was so windy outside, I noted.

I could hear the sound of trees moving in different directions and throwing off so many leaves at the same time. It seemed like it would rain any minute. If it rained I would never go to sleep. In fact my boy friend’s body seemed to be lingering close to me and if it became any colder I didn’t know if I could handle it. What a waste of thoughts. I remembered the last message Romeo sent which had read; “I want to kiss your body and hold you.” I had memorized all the words after reading it over and over again in my head and thinking about him wanting me as much as I wanted him! I was really exhausted and my body felt hot with desire as Romeos’ words echoed in my mind. I couldn’t let go of the romanticism that had suddenly bewitched my mind so intensely.

However my delirious fantasies that had swept me away came to an end when I suddenly heard the sound of dogs barking so loudly. I almost fainted with shock as they barked and bellowed into the night for almost ten minutes before falling silent again. I went to the balcony door and made a quick peek at the wind, which gave me a lot of relief that it was only just that. Things fell and clanked outside but then fell silent again, bringing a momentary relief. I should return to bed I said to myself which I did quickly in the half darkness of the house which was barely lit by the security lights outside. I felt the wonderful softness of the velvet bed sheets on my skin and thanked myself for taking my usual soothing warm bath before climbing into bed or I would be hot as a microwave.

I still failed to fall asleep as curiosity took me over with the thoughts of mysterious noises outside my window. I lay down for a few hours before hearing low voices whispering harshly in the distance.
The voices were so hashed I could barely make out anything. So I slid the curtain half open while peering into the darkness that was thick with foreboding. There was a thick bush of plants before the fence that surrounded my house revealing three dark figures.

Oh my God! I could not believe what my eyes were seeing.

The thin wall between me and the outside almost vanished as I was paralyzed with fear for my own life.

I couldn’t believe today I was actually witnessing the horrible crimes of this neighborhood at night. I knew of these crime from stories told to us by neighbors.
whoever today I was witnessing it with my own eyes which shook me like nothing ever shook me with fear before. My heart increased its beating and I felt like screaming but could not as I realized that it would not help anyone. Two of the dark figures were male who were in charge of terrorizing the innocent female in the dark.

I could now see below me that the two males were pulling and choking their victim while trying to silence her at the same time.

The night silence was disturbed by the struggle of heavy breathing sighs and chokes cries of the victim whose defenses were useless. We had a watch man! Where would he be at this time? I was so scared I quickly closed the curtain and jumped out of bed. I was home with my three sisters who were deep in sleep while mom had traveled up country. So I could not ask for the watch man’s number but went for the home telephone and searched for it. Luckily I saw the number and called immediately.

“Hello?”

“Hello?” a deep gruff voice replied after a long wait.

“Askari, there is a woman being attacked outside.”

“Who is this?”

“Julia.”

“Ehh…let me go and check.” He hang up in a more alert manner before I could make out his back ground noise. These watch men could be negligent. I was sure I had woken him up from a deep sleep. I stood in the sitting room quietly waiting to hear a confrontation but did not hear anything till ten minutes later when I heard the noise of three men. It must be the watch men I thought. They had taken so long to appear, poor woman could be dead by now.

“They have killed!” I heard a loud male voice say in the night.”

“These criminals have finished her! Another said in the same tone. The noise woke up Elizabeth who almost scared me out of my skin.

“What are you doing?” she asked

“Some men were attacking a woman just outside the house, and I heard….sshs” I put a figure on my lips gesturing for her to keep it low which took Elizabeth back to her bed leaving me behind to listen to the voices outside before getting tired finally and going to sleep myself. I went back to bed and tried to see through my curtain window again. The moon had come out brightly leaving no serious shadows so I could see the watch men standing at the same spot the men had held the female.

The men had seen the watch men and fled immediately after robbing and killing the woman.

She was stabbed they said learning from their loud conversation.

I was terrified by the revelations of the watch men.

How could this be?

I wished it had been a rainy night with lightning bolts flashing through the grey sky. Another night all together. I wished it hadn’t been a night of death with a young woman being murdered. What a ruined night for me, I groaned.

I wished I had been feeling cold from a stormy weather instead. When it is cold and I am watching the dark sky through my window, it is entertaining. It makes me long for Romeo to hold me all night except when a crime happens.
