There was once a man who had three sons. The sons were always quarreling despite their father’s effort to bring them together. They could never agree on anything. This man had a herd of seventeen cows. When the man's time to depart from this world came, he wrote and left behind a will on how the sons were to divide the cattle. The declared the following in his will: The eldest son was to get half of the herd, the second born was to get a third of the herd and the last born was to get a ninth of the cattle.
As we all know, seventeen being a prime number cannot be divided by any other number apart from itself and its multiples. The sons unable to divide the cattle amongst themselves decide to take issue to the village elder. After listening keenly to what all the son’s had to say, the man simply ordered one of his cows to be added to the lot.
So the total number of the cows in the herd was eighteen, the eldest son got a half, that is nine cows, the second born got a third, that is six cows and the last born got a ninth that is two cows. The total number of the cows that the sons got was seventeen and the elder took back his one cow.
Moral: In any conflict, it is all about seeking that middle ground which wills serve all parties equally. It might require a lot of self sacrifice even in the part of those not involved in the conflict, however,it is never in vain and all that is given in good faith, will still come back to us in totality.
