Beyond Plan Z

by Teddy Kimathi
“He still has a deep conviction in what he believes”, a nurse said to a doctor, as she observed a patient gazing outside. “It’s dark, and yet he stares outside, as though he can see birds flying, trees swaying in the wind, patients moving on wheelchairs….. I can tell it with the help of his eyes”.
Dressed in pajamas, wearing black, cotton -cushioned sandals, and a nurse observing him, the patient knew more than just gazing at the dark outside. Holding a PhD in Astro-Physics, many theories had been written and published to his name.
The name “Prof. Daniel Webber”, spread across the world, as far as Physics fans were concerned. Besides having a collection of trophies and award certificates because of his breakthroughs, he also had two daughters, a son, and a loving wife.
His intellectual passion was the same thing, which brought him to a life of being given insulin shocks and anti-depressants almost daily. It all began three months ago, when he came about with quiet an eccentric theory. Most top thinkers and board members in space agencies began to mock him, sometimes giving exaggerated remarks in front of the press cameras.
“You should be watching Star-Trek often, to get more ideas”, “Are extraterrestrials your next door neighbor?” Quit Physics doctorate…..” the statements went on and on.
Two weeks later, in one summer afternoon, a naked man was sighted carrying a satellite dish. A curious crowd surrounded him, out of nowhere. Astonishingly, he didn’t show any sign of embarrassment as teenagers took photos of him, and children burst out with laughter. He looked composed, and filled with life.
It didn’t take long for a van with three men, dressed in white shirts and trousers, to come. Professor Webber was escorted to the van with ease, as though he was being guided to his birthday surprise. He didn’t resist or yell, as protesters did.
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
“Professor Webber webbed in madness”, read a newspaper headline. They were already two nights in the asylum, for the Professor. His wife couldn’t stop weeping, wondering what became of a man she valued as her husband. It was a reality that she couldn’t stand any longer.
In occasional intervals, some of his colleagues came to visit him. As the Professor conversed with them, doctors and nurses wondered whether the theorems the patient was uttering so confidently were really true.
“He needs some rest now. You can come tomorrow”, one of the doctors attending the patient said, as he administered a dosage into Professor Webber’s drip.
“Remember what I told you. The best solution to solving all our problems is stepping back in time and correcting them. Wars, diseases, poverty, and other woes will cease in the end. Once I made a leaf to teleport. Nakedness is the best state that you should be, just like the naked leaf…,” the Professor said, as he went to slumber world, with a smile of determination lingering in his face.
His colleagues hoped that he would successfully push through the treatment, and change the world’s future for the better. They were determined to kill all the dictators throughout the past, from the time of their conception. The plan was secretly called “New World”.
Professor Webber had no clue what was going on in his colleagues’ minds.
