Ben

by LUIS K.
I gave him a cursory look as i entered, Ben and I had been a friends since we were in high school, i knew him since he was a budding teenager chasing after young girls, now we were partners in the same legal firm.

For the last two months i had been noticing a strange change in Ben, he had entered into a mild depressive state from the moment he had separated with his wife of six years, Ben who had once been jovial and outgoing had now become introverted, choosing to spend his time alone filling crossword puzzles, this was not the only off-thing about Ben lately he had been feeding very poorly; choosing the comfort of sugary snacks and junk as opposed to a healthy diet. He had also started accumulating bottles of strong liqueur at his office at an alarming rate which had all of us concerned as Ben was integral part of our firm.

Efforts at an intervention had borne little fruits, and we all had a feeling that something was about to go terribly wrong, eventually we were not ready for what happened.
One morning Ben simply disappeared i say disappeared because everyone saw him enter the office, but when his personal secretary went in to inquire a detail regarding work, she found an empty chair, his laptop was still on though. Perplexed Sally thought he had left the office without her noticing, she rationalized maybe he had sneaked out as she was busy on the phone or busy with a customer.

But soon afterwards it turned to concern when his mobile phone went unanswered and he didn't return his text messages, a review of the CCTV cameras in the office showed Ben entering his office and nowhere did they show him exit.
Eventually we had to report a missing persons report with the authorities, we then tried tracking him via his mobile phone but the GPRS coordinates we got kept shifting at an alarming rate, it was impossible to pinpoint his exact location for more than ten seconds.

We were all perplexed and left scratching our heads in confusion and Ben was never to be found again. The police search turned blank and family and friends couldn't trace him either, eventually his phone signal disappeared too, it was as if Ben had become one with the wind.
