Baaba: Chapter 4

by safohen
The next day, Baaba found herself in the hut of the priestess of the asafo. Ordinarily, she would have stayed away but Kuukua had told her that receiving counselling once a month was compulsory for every asafo in their village.

)komfo (Priestess) Naarkie, a seventy year old lady (she had insisted on telling Baaba her age) went straight to the point. 'Have you experienced nightmares, sleepless nights and other distressing symptoms such as mild paranoia?'

'No. I've accepted the fact the kakai situation'

'Really?'

'Yes'.

'Then, we're done here'. Naarkie smiled. 'You can go now.'

That afternoon , Efua, Asafoakyere of the second company and the other asafo companies stood between the kakai and the edge of Dinn forest. 'They've never come this close to the city before' Efua frowned.

A kakai lunged at her with an afowatsena (double or triple blade sword) but she blocked the attack with one machete and swung at the kakai with another, breaking through the kakai's blades slashing at it from head to toe with the machete.

A kakai swung at Baaba's neck but she nimbly spun away and slashed off its head. She darted towards five kakai before they could let off arrow length steel needles and slashed through them with her akofena (sword).

Steel needles flew past Kuukua as she sidestepped them and lunged at the kakai, breaking through its defenses and slashed it. She then deflected a serrated spear with her afowatsena and seconds later, let off three arrows at three different kakai, catching them in the chest.

Baaba slashed through fifteen kakai with her machetes, in a blur of movement.

Asafo wielding very long spears stabbed the other kakai and drove them into trees, shaking the leaves off them . Five kakai took two arrows to the head, resulting in instant banishment. Minutes later, all the kakai had been banished and the two other gates had been sealed by the captains.

'Why were they so close to the edge of the forest, Baaba?' Efua asked.

'The Ring is decaying over time. There are only ten days to the end of this month of December, after all'. Baaba replied grimly.
