A typewriter with a soul

by Steven Lee
'Congratulation, Mr. Wu, you're hired!' said by Mr. Carter with a warm smile. I'm glad that I got this job, although the paycheck was not with bunch of numerical numbers on it, but it was enough for my daily spending and yet I still can do some savings. The important thing is that my jobs was easy, I'm a junior news editor for a newspaper printing company. There was nothing hard for me because of my perfect CGPA in journalism. I'm not going to brag about myself, but is true that the interview was done after Mr. Carter saw my CGPA. And besides that, this was just a temporary job as I might go for more journalism study at foreign country. But for this period of time, I'm going to do my best and maybe this might give me a new experience that how a editor work.

'Your seat is over there Stanley.' Mr. Carter said to me with a grin. Wait !? What !? They still operate with a typewriter ? In 21st century, I can't believe myself that the company still operate using a typewriter and the working environment was awful. A gentleman in a suit walked towards me and pad me in the shoulder. 'Stanley is it? My name is John Reese, I'm your senior, I know I know the place was kind of suck but it still is comfortable.' Mr. Reese was like a worm inside me, he knew what I think for that moment. He continued ' I used to be a junior editor also, the reason that this department did not refurnish was because that my senior editor Mrs. Finch did not wanted the office to changed and she just passed away recently, so we did not have the time to refurnish it before the recruitment.' And Mr. Reese comfort me by telling me if I need anything just go and find him. So I'm just a replacement......

I finished my work that day and submit the edited articles to Mr. Reese. As I was preparing to pack myself and left, Mr. Reese called me to his office. I walked into the office and Mr. Reese looks right at me with a strange looks, he didn't say anything and handle me my edited news. There was bunch of line of words was highlighted,

Ross Carter Sucks! all of the lines were the same.....

My body went numb, did I just wrote that? I knew I was not at my best today but did I really wrote that? I immediately apologized to Mr. Reese and promised him I would check and re-do it again. Then I quickly sat back to my seat and retype all the mistake part.

'Tick tock tick tock....' it was already 1:30 a.m. and I'm still in the office editing the news. I take a few minutes nap and I woke up seeing all my news was changed to 'Ross Carter Sucks!' there's something was a miss, did someone tried to mess up with me? I yelled in the office 'Is not funny at all!' Suddenly all the stuff around me moved and all the light went flickering. I was in shocked and sat down to the floor, the whole table was shaking and the typewriter was typing on itself !!! ROSS CARTER SUCKS!!! It kept on emphasize that my new boss sucks? But why ?

I walked towards the typewriter with trembling legs, and I sat down and gently type on the typewriter 'Why?' It stopped for a while and continued by typing a story for me.

She was Mrs. Finch, she worked for this company for almost a decade and during her funeral, her boss didn't even show up, she dedicated her life helping the company and this was what she get in return so she decided to haunt the company by doing so, and I was the first one that tried to communicate with her. No wonder why Mr. Carter hire me upon I'm showing my results, not because of my CGPA he hired, is because he already lose a lot of worker due to the same incident I experienced. I replied her that I will help her and hope her may rest in peace.

A promise is a promise, I didn't went home that night, I took all the papers that contains her afterlife words and folded into origami flowers. And the next day, after all the employee reached, I told what happened to Mr. Carter and Mr. Reese and I hope they and all the employee will join me and give a proper farewell to Mrs. Finch. We all standing in front of her grave putting origami flowers on it and Mr. Carter did confessed to her that he was not able to show up due to her wife was in an accident that day and he also apologized to her.

After that day, Mrs. Finch didn't haunt the company again. And I felt grateful that I can helped to solve a misunderstanding between an employer and an employee.
